FALL 2005  Saskatoon Friendship Inn

Oval: Following A Mission

Another year of following the mission two men passed on: to foster friendship, compassion and a sense of belonging. It is with this mission the late Mr. Jack Leier, the Catholic Diocese through Bishop Mahoney and the Inner City Council of Churches founded an organization.

Thirty-six years ago a truly generous man purchased the building and partnered with the Catholic Diocese and the Inner City Council of Churches to establish our agency. The Saskatoon Friendship Inn came into existence.

The reason we are so fortunate in being able to continue fulfilling a truly compassionate mission is due to this community and rural area’s generosity and giving 365 days throughout the year. The amount of cash donations, food, and volunteer time are indeed amazing.

As I come to work each day the feeling of making a difference in the lives of those in need whether it be a meal, a cup of tea, or just some kind words is truly what the Friendship Inn is today.

I have had the privilege of meeting many of our donors and this year I have taken the time to go through a lot of the history of the Inn. It is truly incredible the number of people who have given so much to make a difference to those in need. The Board of Directors, the Executive Directors, the wonderful staff and the volunteers have all made the Inn what it is today. As I have been hearing from many of you it has truly become, “A safe, healthy, dependable place for anyone to be welcomed for whatever the reason that has brought him or her here”

This past year we have watched war, floods, devastation, people who have lost loved ones being left with only memories. In all of this we here in Saskatoon and the rural areas manage to care for our families, ourselves and still continue to unselfishly give to those in need right here at home.

I welcome a call from anyone wishing to share how important this organization is to you in helping those in need in our own backyard. Through nutrition, warmth, compassion and security we all can see the difference we make together each day throughout the year.
I thank all of you, our Board of Directors, volunteers, and the staff who help to see the mission of the Inn continue.

Geselle Doell, Your Executive Director

“Pot of Soup Campaign 2005”

We kicked off our campaign on June 16th,with our annual celebrity challenge.  We had three celebrities with their favorite recipes.  Our cooks took great care in preparing these recipes, which were served, by Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods, Saskatoon Police Services, and our defending champ Jackie Kripki from Shaw Television   We had the Saskatoon’s Fire and Protection Services to help serve, clean and judge as well as our volunteers and clients.  It was close for all three and we ended up in a tie. Dave Malanovich from the Saskatoon Police Services serving his Super Mama Leggie Soup and Jackie serving her “Souper Easy Potato Soup”.

We do wish to thank  Mitchell’s Gourmet Foods, their staff and wives for assisting us in this event and also their kind donations throughout the year.

With the assistance from CJWW, Hot 93 and Magic we raised over $30,000.00 for this campaign.  Our Pot of Soup Campaign has become a success, as it fits our organization which sees 600 people and feeds over 500 people each and every day of the year.

Thank you to all of those who donated cash and food to make this a success.

These retail outlets sell our Mini-Pots for $1.00 and display them starting July 1st and ending September 30th.  This fundraising event successfully raises awareness of the work of Friendship Inn throughout our city.  We thank the retailers very much and look forward to next year.  This year the Inn worked with Leadership Advantage Students from the University of Saskatchewan; their task was to assist us in making some retail contacts in order to expand our fundraiser.  With their assistance we were able to add some of the university food services and St.Thomas More College.
